Kimmie Kyees – RockStar Manicurist Interview
Tell us a little about yourself, what is your background and where do you come from?
I’m 34 orginally from Michigan – raised in Ohio! I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters they are all amazing. I have lived in LA almost 6 years nows – wow how time flies.
Do you work out of a salon or are you always on the go?
Always on the go!!!!! And at any hour – I did Khloe Kardashian last night at 10:30 PM!!!!
You’ve worked with some big names like Jenna Jameson, Kylie Minogue & Paris Hilton to name a few, did you start out planning to work with celebrities?
Honestly I didn’t – I worked for mobile spas and was convinced celebrities would be on the go so much they wouldn’t make very good regular clients – I just got back from Germany with Rihanna – boy I was wrong!!!!
Plus working with celebs allows me to be a part of some amazing projects with some of the most creative and talented artists, beauty professionals, photographers, creative directors in the world!
Are there any differences when working with male or female clients?
The biggest difference is that you don’t have to polish men’s nails (most of the time) so I finish quicker a shiney buff only takes a couple minutes but applying polish takes a bit longer!
What is the strangest place you’ve done nails?
In night clubs – on just about any location – I’ve worked in bathrooms, laundry rooms under vanities laying almost flat on my back you name it I’ve done it… polishing nails while walking to set, or on clients sleeping in bed!!!
We see you take lots of photos as you work, are you pursuing ambitions in photography as well?
Photography was actually my first love – I was always the girl with a camera WAY before digital. I bet I spent a small fortune on deveopling film in my lifetime!!!! My younger sister Tiffany is actually a photographer now and she takes all my headshots-she’s so incredibly talented!!!
Does Minx make life easier in the fast lane of nails?
Definitely – there’s no dry time – what’s better than that when everyone’s rushing around and in a hurry!!
Also it allows me to be creative in ways I wasn’t able to do before and b/c Minx does custom designs, my celeb clients luv it!!!!!
What is your favorite Minx pattern so far & where / who did you apply it to?
Wow I can’t pick just one – every time I get new patterns it’s my new favorite 🙂 skulls right now – they were custom done for Avril Lavigne, we put them on her at her home in LA.
Your services are personalised with an emphasis on wellness, what advice do you give your clients for creating their own spa-like atmosphere at home?
I put river rocks in my pedicure bowl – it adds a relaxing touch – and a fuzzy bath mat under my bowl for when the feet come out of the water :). Find products that smell great as well as do a good job. Music is always a great way to create atmosphere as well.
Do you do your own nails?
Ahhhhh – my toes yes!! My fingernails, I keep my cuticles nice and the nails buffed and filed into a good soft square oval “sqoval” but I rarely polish – for 2 reasons. 1. I work with polish remover everyday – and 2.
I like to keep my nails natural so I can try on colors that my clients are looking at – It helps to see the color on!
What products do you endorse?
SO many!!! I don’t love just one line there are amazing products from so many – like Orly’s base coat Bonder and Seche Vite top coat. I love EZ Flows pro shine buffer and of course Minx!!! I use Creative’s Sensations and Spa Rituals cuti cocktail cutile oil!! And as far as color I use EVERYTHING – OPI, Essie, Nubar, Spa Rituals, Orly China Glaze…. And I’m not opposed to buying drug store brands either if the color catches my eye.
Any tips for trends in 2010?
I definitely see Minx staying in as a front runner in the trends! Minx has evolved in the public eyes from the shiny metal nails, to the stuff Beyonce wears and now people are calling Minx by name – when I was on a video a couple weeks ago the stylist said he’d love it if we used Minx!!!!
Do you think the Internet has had an effect on the nail industry?
I think it is instrumental in bringing out new products and an essential tool for marketing. And when celebs are wearing something the Internet helps get exposure for the product lines!!!
I always go online to see what the new colors are and make sure I have every thing that is new.
Sometimes life isn’t just about nails, what else do you love to do?
I love to hike, run, rollerblade – I have a ping pong table and a dart board at home – and getting a bunch of friends together for board game night is the Best!! I love to travel and always make time to go back to Ohio a few times a year to hang out with my family!!!!
