Ok… so that is a sign of the times! LOL – you can find me everywhere online and at Starbucks.

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I am Canadian. I am a licenced hairstylist, makeup artist and fashion manicurist.

Where are you located?
I am currently based in Singapore.

Image © Mario Miotti

How long have you been in the industry and what inspired you to do nails?
I’ve been in the industry for 20+ years now. I’m… young at heart. When I did my hairstyling licence part of our licencing was in nails. So to be clear: I don’t do ‘nail art’ or acrylics/gels or any permanent type of extensions. I started off doing nails on my sets as many models really neglect their hands and you can’t have a beautiful shoot without all aspects coming together and then leave the hands out. What are you going to do? Gloves don’t work in every shot!

I guess what inspired me to do nails was my attention to detail.

Harper’s Bazaar Magazine (editor Alli Sim) – Image taken by Charles Howells

Truly an international nail artist, you are a native of Ontario who relocated to Singapore in 2007. Is there a story behind that extreme move?
When I was dating my now husband he proposed to me and then 2 days later his company asked if he would relocate to Singapore. I was a single mother of 2 pre-teen girls at the time in Toronto. My career was booming; on my second makeover show, shooting every day, supportive agent and circle of friends and along came Mr Perfect…

My husband is lawyer. We moved to Singapore for his work. I’m lucky that my ‘office’ fits into a ‘box’; I have a ZUCA, best for whizzing your kit around the world as it fits in the overhead. [I bought my ZUCA after AA lost my kit on my way to do hair & makeup for Lady Antebellum. BTW: I MINXed Hillary which was still on for her InStyle shoot!]

Alexis Magazine – Image taken by Chuck Reyes

You are back in North America now, how does Austin compare to Singapore?
And… I was in North America and now I am back in Singapore. LOL. Yes. Our entire household contents were shipped overseas three times.

The comparison… it’s all the same. I get asked this a lot. I feel anticlimactic when I say that but being on set here is no different, except they don’t cater for meals.

I’m used to the food spreads that we would have in Canada. Here you come to set and there’s pretty much no food. Some sets don’t even take a lunch. Relocating to Singapore was a challenge. You leave a market where you are well-known and requested on set weekly to entering a market where the culture is different and no one knows you. I wish I could say it was humbling but I would say it has been more frustrating than humbling. Thankfully the beauty PR people in NYC/LA and Canada know me so I’ve asked them to connect me with an intro to their brands here. MAC Cosmetics has been a huge supporter.

Glajz Jewelry – Images taken by Jeff Chen

Although there were some difficult moments to start I’m pretty established in Singapore now. Since moving here in 2007 I have shot with Bazaar, Designare, ELLE, Seventeen, Alexis, Amica, Women’s Weekly, Her World etc. [Singapore editions]… I did a great spread for Bazaar December 2010 using the Silver and Gold Lightning Minx and due out next week a 4-page makeup/nail story for Alexis magazine and I just appeared on a celebrity charity episode of Cash Cab, Asia!

And it’s hard to beat all the exotic travel for work and pleasure! [I was just in Hong Kong for a weekend and by fluke, ran into Dawn and Janice from Minx Nails who were also in HK!]

Behind the scenes for Alexis Magazine

You’ve worked in the celebrity world in a variety of areas including film, music videos and magazine shoots. Where is the most bizarre place you’ve given a manicure?
Hm… I’ve been given closets to work in on set. Not kidding. And always funny to hear the PM/client/A&R… whoever say “This is ok for you right?” Um… for what? Way to make someone feel validated on set… but sometimes the locations really don’t have space so you need to make do with what you have. [The ability to be adaptable is to carry your own lights too – I bought the Glamcor lights – amazing whether you need light for hair, makeup or nails!]

I’ve done beauty on the side of the road, in a proper film vehicle for makeup, in a closet, in a restaurant, on the fly in a moving vehicle… really the world of being on set is also being adaptable to various situations and just going with it. You have to be a ‘Yes! Can do!’ person.

Gold Stud Minx

Obviously you love Minx, do you have a favourite design?
For my personal wear I’m partial to the Gold Stud and the python… but I do become a kid in the candy store when I look at the styles available.

What makes Minx such a desirable product?
The versatility and how fast you can do it for sets and celebrities; and of course the zero drying time! Huge plus! When I did Hillary Scott’s Minx it was 30 minutes before she was jumping on a plane. When the last Minx was on, she was out the door in 2 seconds.

The Republic – Image taken by Jeff Chen

What other nail products do you endorse professionally?
I use OPI, Zoya, Sally Hansen, RMK, Chanel… Minx has been very supportive and with me being in Singapore they have still managed to get Minx to me with short timelines for shoots.

Your career has taken you in front of the camera as well. Do you prefer to be in the spotlight or behind the scenes?
I love both. I’ve always loved to entertain [I think I’m entertaining…]; when I was a teen I was heavily involved with the drama club at my High School and often said I would be an actress. I also did hair and makeup for productions in school as early as Grade 6! I guess becoming a hair & makeup artist / fashion manicurist and with my drama club years, it’s allowed me to do both.

I can walk and chew gum at the same time! [Just not in Singapore. Gum’s illegal]

Image © Mario Miotti

But, I know when it’s not about me. I show up with my ‘set style’ – barefaced, ponytail and gear ready to beautify whoever is in my hot seat. I never jump in for celeb photos because I think their time is with me, not another photo-op… although I am curious what my peers think? Agree or not? I’d LOVE to hear your thoughts.

Which nail products do you use on your own nails at home?
EVERYTHING. Anything I use in my kit I try first on myself and my teen daughters; friends too if they are lucky.

How do you feel about nail products that are tested on animals?
I do my best to have a clean, ethical and morally friendly kit – how I feel is like asking someone about their religion or their political stance, it’s a can of worms that is not a win-win.

Alexis Magazine – Image taken by Alvin Tang

Be a good person, do your best and then some, be sweet to everyone without ulterior motives … I truly believe and live this way and I am totally ok with sounding cliché.

What are the benefits of salon care versus caring for your nails at home?
Details. Sure, it’s always good to upkeep and DIY at home but with all the facial anti-aging tricks women forget their hands and your hands, my friends, will reveal your true age if you aren’t careful, so both at-home care and salon care is important.

Any superstar tips for those who like to do their own nails at home?
Don’t soak them. Madge was so 80s, [for those who know the old Palmolive ads].

Image © Brendan Zhang

Use cream and cuticle oils every time you wash your hands and sunscreen whenever you go outside.

Out of everyone in the world (regardless of era) whose nails would you like to do and why?
Bradley Cooper because then I have an excuse to hold his hand; although, I’d probably fumble and drop all my tools and look like an idiot. [Husband read: Megan Fox so I can tell you that I worked on Megan Fox.]

All nails aside, what else gets you out of bed in the morning?
Responsibility and a Triple Tall Dry Cappuccino from Starbucks…

If you could have a superpower what would it be?
The power to read minds. It would help on a daily basis. But then I would need to be able to shut it down…

Where are you located?
Now in Santa Monica featuring (The Nail Studio) inside Fred Segal Salon.

What inspired you into the world of nails?
My family has been in the beauty industry since I was 16 years old. It was a passion for art first then color second and loving to paint first and foremost.

It’s not just about fashion and beauty for you, your work also has a cause – curing cancer (& we really respect that). Can you tell us about your involvement and the pamper days you donate to cancer survivors?
A good friend inspired me to give back, so I created a pamper day just for cancer survivors. The look on the faces of all the ladies as they enjoyed being treated.

If others in the industry want to get involved, who should they contact?
They could contact me directly via my email.

Melissa with Denise Robert’s and Lisa Rena at the first Pamper Lounge for Breast Cancer Survivors.

On a lighter note, you’ve worked with a colourful list of celebrity clients and we are guessing that means doing nails under some very strange circumstances. Where is the most bizarre place you’ve ever given a manicure?
Umm once for Vogue we had to do nails in this house with no lights. Just to get to it took over 45 minutes. Hot as the desert, no area to sit anything down. I had to stand and pray the polish would dry and not melt it was so hot in Topanga Canyon.

Of course the images came out great you would never know some of the things we go through to get a job done.

What are your favourite products?
Love CND Shellac it’s great, and Gelish as well, China Glaze Ruby Slippers and my new love is Illamasqua, the colors are the best.

How does Minx differ from other nail companies?
Minx is a very different the product with a variety of colors. The product is flexible and easy to work with, you can add gems, polish, gels, it’s amazing.

What effect is Minx having in the Nail world?
It has given us a different option for nail art for those who are not very good at art. They can master the nail wraps and give the client a great experience. I love that we have other services to offer clients and give the professionals more products with high price points.

Out of everyone in the world (regardless of era) whose nails would you like to do and why?
Carol Burnett or Lucille Ball, they are legends. After doing a vlogger event I was blessed to do nails in the I Love Lucy Room at the Hollywood Museum home of Max Factor.

We know it’s a difficult industry, but do you have any advice for nail techs aspiring to work the celeb circuit?
We are hosting a workshop in the New Year and it’s a great industry to work in. Keep your kit up to date, stay current on trends and brands look for our “How To Build Your Portfolio” Workshop.

I want to give to others what I have learned. it’s not easy, but it’s fun and very rewarding.

You’ve been in the nail industry for over ten years, do you see a trend towards more ethical & ecologic products?
More eco products for sure. We are going towards more natural products.

What are the benefits of salon care versus caring for your nails at home?
In salon we have more professional products, but doing your nails at home is great to maintain.

Which nail products do you use on your own nails at home?
I use natural tea tree oil, lavender oil and OSEA hand and skin cream.

What do you think will be the hot nail trends for 2012?
I see more tribal art work, more blocking and abstract glitter. Gems are in big demand, being from Louisiana with the Indian background I love the tribal it’s a very nice touch.

All nails aside, what else gets you out of bed in the morning?
I love to start early in the day. I rise at 5:30am to a walk or Yoga and meditate for a good 45 minutes with tea. This is going to be a great year ahead, so I’m looking forward to the tribal art flourishing again.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?
The Power To End Cancer.

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I was born in Milan Italy with a dream: to pursue and express my love for beauty in every possible field. My first official step was to get involved in the fashion world. My very first and longest work experience was as a designer assisting Gianni Versace with whom I collaborated for projects in fashion, ballet and opera. I moved to London in 1989 where I continued for a while to immerse myself in the world of fashion, designing spectacular dresses for a Dubai-based luxury haute couture house and accessories for other international companies.

Where are you located?
London my beloved city on earth.

Painting: Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) – The Beguiling of Merlin

You’ve always been a part of the arts. When did you first become involved in the nail industry and what inspired the decision?
As a little girl I became fascinated by polished nails which I looked with awe. My favourite play was to use watercolours and even geranium petals to replicate the effect of varnish. During my time in fashion I explored almost every field in design: clothes, accessories, jewelry, even tiles! At one stage I became aware I have fulfilled a complete perfect the cycle with nothing more to say.

I realised instead that painting my nails was still a constant expression, a source of enjoyment and a way to connect with people. Eventually the right time came when I felt ready to entwine my two passions for England and nail colours.

Tell us about creating a-england
a-england Is a one person concept and offers a product with stories and a heart. My special and unique relationship with England plays an important part in my inspiration. Something I define as “a call from the heart” and the only reason I left behind career and security in my native country. Coming to England represented my “personal Epiphany” and its spirit is intrinsically bonded with my life. That’s why the letter “a” (my initial) is linked to England in the logo. Books have always been dearest companions, paintings and architecture and all the manifestation of arts another great source of pleasure. When I thought about a nail polish brand It came natural to offer not only a product but a story as well inspired by my emotions; something to think, talk and maybe fantasize about.

Adina Bodana, Founder of a-england

2 Other important elements play an important role: beauty linked to quality and to the human contact, caring for each other. Communication, interaction with the world of followers out there is fundamental to me.

Your polish is 3-free and not tested on animals. Thanks for creating a more conscientious product & was it more difficult to create than conventional formulas?
I have been a vegeterian for 24 years now and try to do my best to help the planet.

Cruelty free and 3 Free with max quality were the 3 requests to the manufacturer during my first approach.

Last Sleep of King Arthur in Avalon – Edward Burne-Jones

The whimsical polish names and vivid colours must have been great fun to put together. What inspired the collection theme?
My start is always the same whatever the project: to look at pre-raphaelite paintings, a very English movement of visionaries in the Victorian era and my other long life passion. Edward Burne-Jones especially expresses a world where beauty, peace and love only exist. His renditions of the Arthurian Legend are majestic and to dream for. Also the myth of King Arthur has been one I fantasised more when a child.

St George and the Dragon Series. No.7 – The Return – Edward Burne-Jones

Can you give us a preview of where you think nail fashion will go in 2012?
I am not in the position of giving previews for the future and I am not part of the big commercial cosmetic world. Technology is a very important component to offer quality and fun now and in the future. As for nail fashion I see the magic of colour on nails to develop more, expand and be consistent in the years to come. Each company has something to offer and to say but the constant theme is the pleasure to have a colour on your nails, living with you and been able to observe it all the time with different reflexions in different lights.

Painted nails are more than cosmetic and accessory, they are part of one’s body language.

Tell us about your new a-england collection, The Legend?
Another link to the English culture, another myth and a beautiful story. 7 shades with 6 of theme holos and one sparkle. I had to include 2 green holos to make all the lovely bloggers and customers happy!!! There is also a soft green gold holo very chic that matches my 6 months kitten Tristam’s eyes.

Have you set a launch date yet?
Still waiting for the manufacturer to tell me when my new babies will be delivered…

Tristam in action

Aside from your own, which nail products do you use on your own nails?
A cuticle softener and cuticle oil daily. Nail polish remover of course.

What effect do you think the Internet will have on nails and nail art?
It is an unlimited media. Probably the development of a-england would be at a very early stage without it. The interest and affection bloggers and public gave to me since the first day of launching my web can only be achieved with the Internet.

Some of Adina’s inspiration

It is extraordinary to be able to communicate, find affinities and exchange passions and daily life with all the world just through a screen!

Do you use the Internet in conjunction with your nail business?
Mostly.

Do you have a shout out to any industry peeps/ bloggers?
I… don’t shout, I whisper hahaha. I believe in freedom of expression and creativity. I simply do my own things and let the others do theirs.

The Vision of the Holy Grail to Sir Galahad, Sir Bors & Sir Perceval – Edward Burne-Jones

What else are you passionate about?
I mentioned already my longtime passions. I have a penchant for rings too: mainly Vivienne Westwood ones which I collect; they go so well with my nail polish. A very new addition is my kitty Tristam who’s brought more joy in my life, inspires and amazes me every day with his innocence and purity.

If could have a superpower, what would it be?
To be able to intervene to resolve conflicts and reach justice in a peaceful way.

Many Thanks

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I have been drawing since I was very little, sometimes with my grandmother who was a water colour painter and had her studio in our house. Then I learned art under George Kikunami, a member of Gutai Art Association for 7 years. I studied environmental design at Uni, moved to the UK and started computer graphics before I moved on to Nails.

Where are you located?
Fulham, London.

What do you love most about your work?
I’m happy as long as I’m creating something, it doesn’t matter what the medium is. I certainly enjoy the creation process, but I usually loose my interest towards my creations as soon as I finish making them. It sounds funny but I don’t even want to see my projects/competition works anymore once they’re done.

So I have no problem soaking off clients’ nails that I took 3 hours to create. Which is good.

You offer a ‘by appointment only’ service at your London salon, tell us a little about your clients?
More than half of my clients are Japanese at the moment. This is because I decided to target them when I moved to West London. I used work in East London and most of my clients were Asian ladies, it was a big change. I didn’t have many soak off gel clients there, however, I knew I was going to have to deal with lots of soak off gel with various nail art here in London. I researched the nail art that they would like, practiced a lot and tried to stock gel colours and nail art parts.

How did you first become involved in the nail industry?
I never thought of becoming a nail tech when I started the training, I just wanted to learn nails properly to do mine by myself. I had never been to any nail salons either. I was a DIY girl. A hobby turned out to be work, great. Happy days.

What were you doing before?
I’ve been through all sorts of jobs, including a passenger consultant and an assist accountant.

I even did a carpeting job and built a club house in a golf course.

What are the main difference between the UK and Japanese nail market?
Japanese clients are very knowledgeable about nail art, what’s available and what’s on trend. Also, many of them are very keen on soak off gel. Calgel was a big success in Japanese nail market a while ago and there still are Calgel Worshipers. When they say “Calgel”, they mean “Soak Off Gel”. Other nail companies are doing very well there now though. Also, I heard that new nail techs can paint but can’t structure nails, which means they are very good at soak off gel art but not L&P. This tells you how huge the soak off gel market in Japan is. Trang Nguyen said to me “Japanese nail art has gone a funny direction.” This is a very interesting opinion. I should have asked him more about it, I will next time.

You are one of the most versatile nail professionals in the industry, with a multitude of talents that allow you to be active in competitions, participate in exhibitions, shoots & charity events, write and blog regularly, compose video tutorials as well as run a very successful salon. What’s your fav part?
Nail Art Competitions are fun. There are fewer restrictions compared to salon nails. We can play a lot with it.

I’m writing my blog for advertising purposes. Do I like it? I would rather ask someone else to update my blog, Twitter and website for me. I found it difficult to reply to all of the emails asking “how did you do this?” and “what did you use?”, so I made tutorials.

I also love photographic Nail Art works, especially editing the photos afterward. I do enjoy talking to my clients during the treatments, too. All of my clients are lovely. No fav part, I like them all.

What have been some of your highlights of your career so far?
Scratch Magazine front cover last month!

What else would you like to be involved with in the future?
I’m interested in educating nail techs. I’ll be taking PTLLS course hopefully soon, I keep postponing it as I couldn’t find time.

How would you describe your style?
I would like to know what people think my style is. You tell me, Tam.

Some of the nail art you create is out of this world, where do you get your inspiration from?
You are probably talking about my latest project. I had those inspirations from the artist I worked with in this project. We have completely different stances towards our own art, I’m here, he’s on the other side. He’s very talented but his art are often too painful to me. I had to choose 16 images and edit from 1000 photos we took. I spent 1 week working on it and I was in a major depression the whole week.

What’s the longest time you’ve ever spent on a set of nails?
Spending 3 hours to do a set isn’t unusual to me.

One lady used to use 2 techs (one for her left, another for her right hand) and they still took 3 hours. It wasn’t even a special occasion. She does that every 4 weeks. Incredible.

What are your favourite nail products?
I have many. Harmony L&P, their color powders are beautiful. Gelish is fantastic, easy to use too. I really like Nubar nail polish (their colours are always yummy). NSI Glaze ‘n Go. NSI Attraction is great when I need fast setting. LeChat soak off colour gel, reasonably priced and good workability for art. I can’t do the Box and the Fantasy competition without Arabella forms.

What do you do to relax?
I want to say “a glass of wine” but I’m trying not to drink lately after a few incidents, like…. “oh, I can’t believe I did that last night” related incidents. Quite hilarious ones though. Unfortunately, I can’t write here as I’m a mother and also a nail tech. So I shall say “having a cup of tea after my kids go to bed”.

What 3 things can you not leave home without?
Apart from keys, my purse and my mobile, that would be high heels, long nails and Smith’s Rosebud Salve.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
I just wish I had 30 hours a day. I would sleep in the extra hours.

First things first, tell us where we can find you and your work online.
The website is finally in development, for the time being the web address is connected to my facebook group www.thenailteam.com. I also have some new YouTube videos so take a look at them.

Thanks for doing this follow-up interview. While we’ve asked this before, perhaps you’ll give us a brief re-cap of your background in the industry for those who don’t know.
I’ve been in the industry for 16 years and I am currently 12x UK nail champion, International competition technician of the year 2009, international Judge, Competition organiser and founder of The Nail Team.

Last time we talked you were launching The Nail Team, designed to aide & educate the industry. How is that going & what is the latest?
At the beginning of this year Kirsty Lund decided to leave THE NAIL TEAM to work for Nubar so this has been the first year on my own, but The Nail Team has been very successful and is benefitting a lot of Nail technicians, the nail team facebook page has gone from strength to strength constantly being used by nail technicians as a source of advice and inspiration. But I still have so much to do with THE NAIL TEAM to move it forward.

THE NAIL TEAMs photographic competitions are doing amazing and I have just launched the 6th competition.

What else have you been up to?
Wow where do i start. It’s been an extremely busy year. I had the pleasure of being entered into the World Nail Championships in Dusseldorf and was delighted to be placed 7th in the World. The Nail Team has successfully run 3 more photographic competitions. I have been working very closely with NSI, <a href="http://www.nailangel.co.uk/Nail Angel and Naio Nails on various videos tutorials and photo shoots. I have also been working along side Denise Wright working on a new format for the UK Nail Competitions.

I have found the education side of my work extremely busy especially with the one stroke techniques. On top of all this I have gone into partnership and opened a new salon and training centre (with Paula Gethin). We decided to call it Butterflies Nail and Beauty Studio, and it is situated in Barnby Dun, Doncaster.

What kind of things do you offer on your courses?
Courses that are available through the nail team range from NSI beginner courses up to Competition level and advance nail art skills. I also have been extremely busy this year with one-to-one training, where the student chooses what they would like to concentrate on. I have travelled to various places for group training including Cornwall, Kent and Manchester in the UK and Finland and Dublin for international courses.

You are at the end of a year long tour with the Nail Team & Nubar around the UK. We imagine it was great fun, any funny moments to share?
I had a great time on THE NAIL TEAM and Nubar tour, Kirsty still came along to give me a hand, we had a great time showing off the new gel polish from Nubar and seeing what we could do with them in designs.

You’ve always been active in competitions, have you been involved with any lately or has the education circuit been your priority?
I did go to the World Nail Championships in Dusseldorf this year and it helped me see where the UK competitions should be heading.

I would love to see the standard of the competitors in the UK rise to the international level so I’ve been working closely with Denise Wright (UK competition organiser) to implement some rule changes and new categories.

In your opinion, where will nail fashion trends go in 2012?
I would love to see technicians pushing the boundaries of nail art, incorporating one stroke and 3d art. I especially see the acrylic and gel art being transformed by the launch of my new pigments coming very soon.

In the fashion industry I can see a big come back for lace especially in the early months of next year.

What is your latest favourite nail art product?
My new pigments and one stroke paints.

From what we can tell you like to keep your nails in different pots, do you have any exciting new ventures in the works?
The plan for the next 6 months is to work heavily on video tutorials and to launch a small product range that will help nail technicians achieve new heights with there skills and also to work on the UK competition team.

Professional talk aside, which nail products do you use on your own nails at home?
I work with new nail companies testing their products for them.

I tend to use myself as a guinea pig for all new products.

If you had to pick one forever, would you keep your nails long or short?
I keep mine long stiletto shape, love purple and love glitter!!

Out of everyone in the world (regardless of era) whose nails would you like to do and why?
I would of loved to have done Princess Diana’s nails. I had the pleasure to meet her when I was 9 years old at a Banardos Childrens Awards. She was a very beautiful and elegant women, that had an amazing passion for helping people.

What’s on your nails right this very second?
I have long edge nails on using my new black pigment silver foil and an iridescent glitter topped of with one stroke purple and blue flowers and butterflies.

What else gets you out of bed in the morning?
I have 2 beautiful boys age 11 and 4 so school run every day and my 2 cockapoo dogs, coco and puppy daisy.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?
16. My super hero power would be to slow time down, that way I can fit more clients in a day and maybe a little sleep would be nice, also more time for my supportive partner and family.

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I’m a mommy of a ‘tween (8 year old Alicia) and stepmom to 24y ear old Alex, 23 year old Marissa and 16 year old Lane.

My professional background is mostly from the tech industry, where I have worked as a data analyst/ SAS programmer for over 10 years in companies like Hewlett Packard and, Intel. After Alicia was born I also took on a side job and started selling kids clothes and accessories as a sales agent.

AllyKats was my 2nd line that I took on.
It was always my favorite line!

Where are you located?
I’m from the Pacific NW in the US (state of Washington).

How did you first become involved in AllyKats?
As a sales agent – I represented the line starting in 2004. In mid-2007 I purchased the business from the original owner. AllyKats was always my favorite line, and as other lines would come and go, AllyKats was the only line I kept the whole time I was a sales agent.

You’ve recently rebranded – what made you decide to do this and how is it now different?
AllyKats had been in the US market since 2004 and was needing to be ‘freshened up’. We had always focused on mainly the children’s boutique market, and with the economic problems that arose in 2008, dozens of boutiques have had to close their doors. In essence, our core market was drying up.

I did a lot of research in 2009, and decided that we needed to update the brand and product mix. We also decided to raise the age of our target market, from 4yrs old and up to ‘tweens (7 and up). So we moved more towards a more modern theme, with more edgy colors and graphics. We moved away from the bath products (shampoos, bubble bath, etc) and now offer cosmetics. We did keep our ever-popular nontoxic sparkly peel-off nail polish, however, but now offer it in a star-shaped bottle with hip colors.

In November, 2011 we will be bringing back our Sparkling Powder Puff with a new paraben-free formulation.

Our new products include:

Nontoxic Sparkly Peel-off Nail Polish in 3 colors (more colors coming soon)

Sparkle Lip Gloss in Pink Frosting

Mini Sparkle Lip Glosses in Pink Frosting & Bare Shimmer, complete with lanyard & AllyKats charm

AllyKats branded cosmetic bag to hold AllyKats products

Sparkling Powder Puff

We also have gorgeous acrylic displays for our retail outlets

We used a focus group of ‘tweens to decide which products and colors to manufacture, so the new line is, in essence, made by ‘tweens for ‘tweens! Of course, true to AllyKats’ nature, all our products are formulated to be safe and gentle for kids.

How easy / difficult was it?
It was a lot more difficult than I originally thought it would be! It took about a year and a half from the time I made the decision to when the new products were actually in. The biggest chunk of time was doing the research – what do ‘tweens like, what do ‘tweens use, what do ‘tweens WANT? After that, it was off to the marketing company to create new graphics and branding. The very last step was actually ordering the products.

Where would you like to see AllyKats in the future?
We’ve been in the boutique market for so many years that it’s time for AllyKats to go mainstream. Girls go crazy over our products, and being only in boutiques limits the number of girls who can get to know the brand. We are working towards the beauty supply and mass market in the US now. Another important goal of mine is to get more distribution in the UK. I get frequent emails from consumers there wanting to purchase AllyKats products. There is certainly a market for us there.

What do you know now that you wish you knew 5 years ago?
Oh gosh, where do I start?! You learn by making mistakes – and I’ve learned a lot since taking over AllyKats!

I hate to admit some of the mistakes I’ve made, but I have learned from them all and am a better business-owner from them!

Why is it important to have products specifically for children?
Children’s product safety is a very hot topic these days, and a very important one. However, there is also the factor of kids wanting products that are THEIRS. Especially with ‘tweens, who want to mimic their older sisters and role models, we need to offer them products that are made for them, are safe for them, and that have the right values.

An AllyKats girl does not go out with bright red lipstick and blue eye shadow. Rather, an AllyKats girl sparkles from head to toe. She garners attention from her shimmery eyes (our eye shimmer brings out the color of ANY eyes), her glossy sparkly lips and her tasteful polish colors.

An AllyKats girl feels grown up but still looks her age. AllyKats proves that a product can be safe and gentle, but also “super cool”.

There are a lot of environmental issues going on at the moment, carbon footprint, toxins in cosmetics to name a few. What can people do to make the world a healthier place for the next generation?
I think as a manufacturer, it is our responsibility to continually educate ourselves on safety issues, especially as they apply to children. Though AllyKats products are not touted as ‘all natural’, they are tested and inspected to be safe for kids.

How do you feel about products that are tested on animals?
I disagree with any and all animal testing, whether it be cosmetics or pharmaceutical or any other industry.

“Our products have never been tested on animals.”

How do you use the Internet in conjunction with your business?
Our site educates consumers on our products, and allows them to purchase directly from us. We highly value our retailers, however, and so we list all our retail outlets so consumers can find a store near them.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
The best part of my job is creating products that make girls’ faces light up when they see them.

You’re a very busy woman – how do you juggle your family, business and work lives?
Oh, it’s tough! How do any of us moms do it? It’s a juggling act, for sure. You have to find time here and there whenever you can. Somehow it just all seems to get done, though sometimes late at night

What are the advantages / disadvantages about running your own company?
The advantages and disadvantages are the same – decisions. Sometimes I GET to make all the decisions, sometimes I HAVE to make all the decisions. Also having to wear all hats – shipping, procurement, accounting, etc.

It is exhausting sometimes, but I wouldn’t give it up for the world!

Do you have any advice for people who want to start their own business but are not sure about how?
Realize that it is more difficult than you imagine, and everything will take longer than you imagine. Oh, and everything will cost more than you imagined!

I think the most important thing to do is be realistic when you start the venture and you will be fine.

What do you never leave home without?
Cell phone

What else are you passionate about?
My family – they are the ultimate reason I do everything I do

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I am a single mother of two fabulous sons’ ages Santana 14 and Mateo 10. I am a very self motivated individual who spends a lot of time journaling.

Where are you located?
I am located in Washington DC.

What was the Industry like when you first became involved in it?
When I entered the industry in 2000 it was saturated with the Asian market and not a lot of manicurist I could reach and communicate with at the time.

Can you give up part of your secret on how to make a manicure/ pedicure longer lasting?
I am very big on moisturizing and client education… I really focus on callus control, and great scrubs, oils, and lotions. And finally a great base coat/top coat and lacquer always seal the deal.

Coming from the field of dentistry I learned you always have to express your expectations of home care to your clients in order to get the ultimate results.

Tell us a little about the holistic nail care treatments you offer?
Holistic Touch is very important to me in my treatments… The use of essential oils, natural scrubs, relaxing teas, candles, and Reflexology are all the elements needed to create that holistic energy.

What are your favorite nail products?
My favorite products would be Minx Nail Designs, Seche Vite (base/ top coat), my homemade scrubs, Prescriptive nails, and a wide range of polishes.

Natasha Minxing a model in L.A

You are one of the first manicurists to ever use Minx, tell us a little about the effect this has had on your career.
Being one of the first manicurists to be exposed to Minx was an amazing experience and a challenge all in one. When I met Dawn and Janice I had just jumped into the business fulltime without any other hustle to fall back on. I had literally just open up my Nail lounge on Capital Hill the same week after leaving LA and meeting with them.

That opportunity opened up major doors for me, some of which I wasn’t even ready for at the time. I had NO clients!! I had to hustle to get my name out there so that I could show the Minx I wanted to be on board… It was an experience like no other when I think back on it.

Gelish by Natasha Ray

You are one of Minx’s top pros, what’s involved in being a Minx Master?
Being a Minx Master is great! It has given me the opportunity to train and motivate other manicurist from all over the world. Working the trade shows and training other manicurist on a product that I truly believe in has been a blessing. I have been sought after by salons in Bermuda and had the opportunity to go there a number of times to train woman who are inspired by me. I can only say that getting involved with Minx nails allowed my light to shine! I feel that being considered a master was a pay off from all the hard work put in to master my craft.

© Natasha Ray

What is your favorite Minx design?
My favorite Minx design is the black and white checker board… I also love the silver and gold lightening.

Have any advice in turning a footfall customer into a longterm client?
Honestly, I have always believed that killing people with kindness places them in a position of looking at what type of energy they are putting out into the universe. And from the moment a client sits in my chair they are educated about the importance of nail care and why they are important to me.

© Roy Cox

How do you balance your work, family and social life?
Tricky… Can’t say I totally mastered this aspect of my life as of yet… What I will say is I have a great support system (my MOM) and spiritual balance. I spend lots of quality time with my boys and include them in my business which keeps them looking forward to whatever I have going on… I give them lots of gratitude for supporting me while I pursue my dreams and being patient with me.

For the past few years I have been blessed with lots of opportunities that require me to travel… I honestly walk with motivation and success on my mind at all times… It’s really cool because my boys love what I do!

You recently attended The Independent Blogger Conference to pamper the attendees, what did you take away from it?
The IBE was awesome! I met so many beautiful people at that event who inspired me to do what I love the most which is writing. I have been journaling since I was 8 years old. These women sparked up something in me that was really waiting to be ignited. It was a great opportunity and great exposure for me.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
My kids give me all the inspiration in the world!!! These two dudes really want to see me SHINE!

Natasha with her sons Santana, Mateo

I am inspired by people who never take NO for an answer and are driven to success in the darkest moments of their life.

What would you be doing if you weren’t in nails?
If I wasn’t doing nails I would mentor young inner city girls between the ages of 10- 18 daily. I feel that I was put on this earth to inspire and motivate those who can’t find their way out of the dark. I had a mentoring program 2 summers ago where I taught nails to the summer youth in Washington DC, this experience changed my life.

I am now pursuing a non-profit organization to aide and assist these girls in finding self worth, journaling, and finding their purpose in life. I also LOVE photography and fashion, yet those things don’t give me the inner peace I find in working with kids.

Do you have a lot of men customers who like to get their nails done?
I do have male clients who come in for routine manicures and pedicures. I even have a few male clients that come in and get Minx on one nail. It’s funny because my oldest son has started a trend at school by wearing Minx on his thumbs. Most men are there for the relaxation and conversation.

Natasha with Minx Nails co-founders Janice & Dawn.

What else are you passionate about?
I am really passionate about the success of my boys. Being able to expose them to life and all it has to offer is important to me. Providing the tools and knowledge for them to fly like eagles is what makes my world go round.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
If I had super powers what would I be… WOW! Got to think for a second.. I would be a healer of all those who lack the ability to express love and affection. If the world had more love it would be a much better place.

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I am from a tiny village near Stratford Upon Avon, in the middle of the countryside, as a complete contrast, I moved to London to complete my studies, and then I became a Teacher. After many visits to Liverpool, I decided to take my work there as the Scouse ladies are very glam!

Where are you located?
When in London I’m mobile, when in Liverpool I work in Peaches & Cream Salon which is famed for its Glamourous makeup and huge range of eyelashes!

Which came first, nails or art?
I think I was born with a pencil in my hand, when other kids were watching TV I was drawing! I studied Art, then Fashion and then my art progressed onto nails.

I like working on an alternative canvas such as nails, skin or fabrics. I now do Nail Art, Shoe Tattoos, Skin Graffiti and much more.

Scratch Dollface is an interesting name, is there a story behind it?
I’ve always worn my nails ridiculously long so that’s where “Scratch” came from. The “Dollface” part is because I also do theatrical makeup and I am training to become a micro pigmentation specialist (semi Permanent makeup).

You also teach, what advice do you find yourself giving your students over again and again?
Believe in yourself, work hard and find something you are passionate about!

Describe your artistic style in 3 words.
Nostalgic, Eclectic, Kitsch

Any tips for the average person creating their own nail art at home?
Make sure you have the basic equipment, a good nail file and top coat as well as a range of colours.

What is your favorite nail product?
Sally Hansen Insta-Dry Top Coat is my all time favorite product!

Can you give us a preview of hot nail trends for 2012?
I think we are going to see a lot more interesting nail shapes, last year was all about the oval, then the stiletto nail, which are not to everyone’s taste but there will be plenty more interesting shapes emerging.

Out of everyone in the world (regardless of era) whose nails would you like to do and why?
Missy Elliot, Janet Jackson, Amy Winehouse, because they are my favourite female artists because of their music and unique styles! Ru Paul & Jeffree Star because they rock women’s clothes and makeup better than some females!

Snoop Dogg, Russell Brand because I’m sure they could both confidently wear nail art and still look masculine! The list is endless…

What would you never leave home without?
My I Phone, I’m always tweeting and taking pictures!

If you could have a superpower what would it be?
Time travel, I’d love to visit the 1950s and be a real life pink lady!

What is your ambition?
I would absolutely love to work with a high street store/fashion designer, to develop a range of pre decorated false nails inspired by catwalk trends, as I feel what is available in stores at the moment is pretty limited! As I mentioned I would like to master the art of semi permanent makeup, adding another string to my bow.

Blog: The Illustrated Nail
Twitter: @IllustrateNail

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I’m 23 years old and was born in Dagenham, East London. I’ve always been passionate about art and as soon as I left school enrolled in art school. I graduated in Illustration and Animation at Kingston University back in 2009 and since then have trained in nail technology courses at Thanet College to explore my other passion, nail art!

Where are you located?
I live in East London but I’m a mobile nail artist so I travel all over London to do peoples nails.

How would you describe your artistic style?
I like detail and pattern, lots of it!

Where do you find your inspiration?
I can find inspiration in just about anything; fabric, print, art, fashion, tattoos, wallpaper, packaging… I end up taking a million pictures of things when I’m out for inspiration for my nail art and I keep scrapbooks too.

Tell us about the most memorable nail design you’ve created.
My most memorable nail design was a floral print I did for M.I.A. on a shoot for W Magazine.

I got to meet Donatella Versace on the shoot and she said the nails were fabulous so I’ll never forget that!

You’ll soon be adding tattooing to your list of skills. Are there similarities between the art of nails and that of tattoos?
I’d love to be a tattoo artist and I think if I hadn’t taken up nails I would have probably followed that path instead. However, I think tattooing is something that you have to concentrate solely on and be completely dedicated to, it takes years and years of training. At the moment I can’t give it my all because I’m really busy with my nail art.

I think there are similarities in the fact that you are working on a person and are following that client’s brief.

Also hygiene and health and safety factors into both, it’s super important to know what you’re doing when working on people. I think you use the same kind of process, you find out what the client wants, create a design, draw it up, prepare your “canvas” and go to work, except nail art isn’t permenant so if I go wrong I can always start over!

Nailpihilia, the UK’s first Nail Art exhibition is on now at 12a Vyner Street, London. How did the idea come about?
Ryan Lanji who curated the show contacted me after seeing my Space Invader inspired nail art on his friend and spoke to me about his idea of having a nail art exhibition. I thought it was a fantastic idea and said of course I’d love to be involved. In the beginning I never thought the exhibition would be as big as it has got then Ryan kept telling me he had got Marian Newman involved and Sophy Robson and the incredible Sue Marsh and I knew then that it was going to be something special.

I was truly overwhelmed and delighted to be part of an exhibition showcasing the work of nail tech royalty. I am still very new to the industry so to exhibit my work alongside the true greats felt absolutely incredible.

Using five words can you describe Nailpihilia.
First, groundbreaking, amazing, inspiring, unmissable.

Tell us a little more about it and the effect this Exhibition will have on the industry?
I think that this exhibition is showing the world that nail art truely is an art form in its own right and shouldn’t be overlooked. It is long overdue. Sue Marsh’s work is just awe inspiring and to think she was doing it over 10 years ago just blows my mind. But back then nail art wasn’t really something that people took seriously, it was so overlooked and I just think that that is such a shame.

My mum who has been in the industry for over 20 years has always loved nail art and I have watched it’s progression from when she first started to what it has become now but it’s a shame that those people that helped shape and develop nail art don’t always get the recognition that they deserve.

I am first and foremost an artist and being able to apply that to my nail passion is great but to be taken seriously about it is even more fulfilling.

Where would you like to see the industry in 5 years?
I think the nail art world can only get bigger and better!

Which nail products & brands do you use on yourself?
CND SolarOil, Andrea Fulerton Nail Boutique Cuticle Eraser, I love OPI nail polish, Seche Vite is the best topcoat EVER!

What one thing do you think every salon should have/ do but doesn’t?
Decent nail art. Most salons I know either do the tacky airbrush type of nail art or are just churning out leopard print and the same boring designs all day long.

I love being freelance as it means I can be as creative and artistic as I like and really give the client what they want. That’s what nail art should be seen as: true art! I’m an artist after all.

In your experience, what makes a good customer?
I know this is really terrible to say but I like a customer to sit still! Doing such detailed work is hard to do when the client won’t stop moving! But that’s why you pick up speed as well as techniques and discover the best way to do it as after all my client’s are only human and can’t keep still forever!

Which of the nail industry celebs do you admire the most?
Sue Marsh. Marian Newman. Andrea Fulerton. Naomi Yasuda. Sophy Robson. I admire them all.

Who’s your favourite style icon/ designer?
Debbie Harry circa late 1970’s early 80’s.
I love Moschino and Luella.
I used to collect a lot of clothing from the 1960’s mainly Mary Quant, Biba and Ossie Clark, I love 1960’s fashion.

Who’s nails would you love to do? (Any era)
I would have loved to have done Amy Winehouse’s nails, she was amazing and she had some pretty bad ass nails. I’d love to do something for Katy Perry as she just has so much fun with her nails, I could really go to town with her.

What else are you passionate about?
At the moment mainly tattooing, it’s something I definitely want to persue in the future. I went to the London tattoo convention on Sunday.

If you were a superhero, which one would you be & why?
Probably one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They live in half shells, fight crime ninja stlyle and eat pizza, what superhero sounds better than that?

Website and places you can find my work online.
www.michinakoide.com

Tell us a little about you, what is your background & where do you come from?
I’m from Japan. I’ve been working in New York for almost 10 years now.

What made you choose nails over other areas of beauty?
I chose to work with nails because I enjoy painting, and I needed to express my artistic side. I went to school for a variety of beauty skills (such as make up, hair, and design) and this is what ended up working out for me and allowing me the most creativity.

How have you seen the Industry change?
I have definitely noticed that people are paying more attention to nail design than before. I think the popularity of Minx demonstrates this change, but Minx is also somewhat responsible for this change as well.

Minx has provided more options and alternatives for nail fashion and has caused nail artistry to become more popular.

What are your top tips for techs wanting to work on shoots and with celebrities?
Always be on time be prepared for every nail option possible! Sometimes you never really know what you will end up doing until you get to the shoot.

What are your favourite nails you’ve created & who did you do them for?
Some of my favorite nails were the Minx fishnet design french nail I did for Lady Gaga. It was Blue Fishnet over Clear, and I made a pointy French manicure.

What effect do you think the Internet will have on nails and nail art?
I think the Internet will give nail art more exposure.

People will have more access to see what is going on in the industry in other parts of the world, and nail technicians and amateurs alike are able to share ideas more easily, and become inspired just by visiting Web sites.

Can you tell us about some of the hot trends in 2011?
I think gel design and crystal…also khaki and moss green shades.

What’s your favourite Minx design?
It’s not actually a design. I love the Golden Lightning Minx. There is nothing else that can compare to the pure gold metallic finish of Minx. We’ve been waiting for decades to see this pure metallic color on nails, and finally Minx figure out how to create it!

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Reading art books inspires me.

If you could do anyones nails who would it be?
I would really love to do Michelle Obama’s nails! That would be amazing.

What would you be doing if you weren’t in nails?
If I wasn’t a manicurist, I would probably be a stylist. Clothes are my next biggest passion!

What was the last thing you bought?
Camera lens
