Common Beauty Products Around the Home
While we usually focus on nails, sometimes we like to pay attention to other parts of our body as well. While we’ve got several great hair, face & body lines in our store there are also common around the house items you can use to keep you pretty.
Closer to Nature
The team at Inspirationail loves to pamper ourselves with luxe products as much as anyone else, but we also love a good product – no matter how much it costs. Here are some common items in everyone’s beauty arsenal that you can create or find around the home.
Whether you want to green up your beauty routine or you are just in a pinch, these simple items can easily be replaced.
It’s easy to be sold on any of the huge variety of shampoo types out there. However in reality the best hair soap is simply soap. We prefer glycerin (vegetable) soaps that are scented with natural oils. Whatever you use, we also advise a shampoo every other or every third day – shampooing strips your scalp of its natural oils.
Similar to above, marketing today would have us believe that conditioner is a must-have. However there are a variety of things that can leave hair feeling soft and shiny – without the chemicals. Try applying a vinegar solution (2 parts water, 1 part apple cider or white vinegar) after shampooing and let sit for a minute before rinsing. Leaves hair soft without chemicals and any vinegar smell goes as it dries.
Many of you laugh at the prospect of giving up your hair beauty products, but in the interest of slimming down this is a good one. For amazing hair all you really need is a hand full of flaxseeds. Bring two tablespoons of flaxseeds and one cup of water to a boil and allow to boil for a minute or two. Remove from heat, strain out the seeds and refrigerate the remaining water (after you’ve stirred in a drop or two of your fave scented oil).
We’ve said this one before, but it bears repeating – natural oils are the best moisturizers around. We generally recommend olive oil, it doesn’t clog pores and provides perfect moisture for skin, hair and nails. Scent it with a few drops of any scented oil and put it in a pretty bottle to make it feel luxurious. Another option is coconut oil, which has its own lovely fragrance – applied directly after a shower it will moisturize for hours.
This is one tip that we’ll always appreciate, it’s time to dump your deodorant. If you aren’t into the natural crystals then all you really need is some baking soda. Sprinkle a little onto a damp washcloth and apply to underarms – you don’t need much to absorb perspiration and neutralize odors (yes, just like in your fridge).
This is another industry that wants you to buy expensive chemicals to better clean you. The best toothpaste will always be baking soda & it’s easy to customize to your own taste. Blend baking soda and a few drops of your fave essential oil dissolved in a bit of water into a paste and use. Try peppermint for a minty rush, rosemary for its antiseptic qualities or even lavender for a relaxing treat.
Believe it or not, lip stains haven’t always come from a plastic tube – and it’s pretty easy to make your very own shade. All you need is a beet or two, a olive oil and powdered sugar. Heat your beets until the juices run and collect them in a small container – add a few drops of olive oil and stir in powdered sugar until you like the consistency. Looks lovely and tastes great!
